Canon EOS 5D w/EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (digital color)
And now a very quick and subjective EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM mini review
I really like the 24-105. It’s very sharp and the IS is awesome. It really throws a lot of the old shooting speed rules out the window. It’s a great walk-around lens when I don’t want to carry a lot of gear and I know I’ll get a lot of use out of it when shooting events and such.
That said…
On a full frame camera like the 5D, the barreling/pincushion distortion common on many zooms is more pronounced than I would’ve thought or perhaps hoped. That means that for most of the “line heavy” compositions I shoot, it’s really just not very suitable. At least, not without some post-processing to try and cure the distortion. I pride myself on rarely opening Photoshop (I use Aperture for workflow and processing), so that might be something for me to get over.
I guess the other solution would be for me to limit the 24-105 to what it’s really good for and stick with my primes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm) for most the art photography.
